Dog Show Near Budge Budge: Kolkata Championship Show, Nov 21-22

How far is the Kolkata dog show from Budge Budge?

About 30 km by road (approximate). Kolkata lies north-east of Budge Budge, which is a municipal town in South 24 Parganas district on the Hooghly. The KCI listing names the city, not the ground, so the distance is to Kolkata and the real figure depends on the venue.

Check a live map on the morning you travel, because city traffic changes the journey a lot.

Is the Kolkata show a day trip from Budge Budge?

Yes. At about 30 km (approximate) most Budge Budge visitors can go and come back the same day. The listing gives no timings, so phone the secretary for the start time. Three events share the weekend, and it pays to know when the one you want begins.

Dobermann owners: should you go on Saturday or Sunday?

The Dobermann Speciality Show is part of the weekend, but the KCI schedule does not say which day it is held. Ring the secretary before you plan around it. If you cannot get an answer, go on both days at about 30 km (approximate); it is a short trip for a breed lover.

Dobermann owners also get to see their breed against the standard, which is hard to do at home.

What about my own dog while I am in Kolkata?

Pet policy is not listed, so arrange for family or a neighbour to look after your dog at home, and keep it away from heat and noise. If you want to bring a Dobermann or another breed to watch, ask the club first.

Could a dog from Budge Budge compete?

Entries go through North Calcutta Kennel Club, and the KCI listing sets out no entry rules or closing date, so the window may have shut. The secretary’s mobile numbers and email are on the event guide.

What should I settle before leaving Budge Budge?

• Which of the three events you most want: the all breeds shows, the Obedience Show or the Dobermann Speciality Show
• That event’s day and start time, which the KCI listing does not give
• The venue in Kolkata, since only the city is listed
• How you will travel, as the trip is about 30 km (approximate) each way

Are there other town guides for the Kolkata weekend?

Baruipur (about 30 km south of Kolkata, approximate) and Uluberia (about 35 km west, across the Hooghly) have their own guides, as does Diamond Harbour at about 60 km south-west. Budge Budge shares its south-west side with Diamond Harbour.

Which breed should you research before buying near Budge Budge?

Start from your daily routine. If you work long hours, a high-energy breed struggles, whatever it looks like in the ring. Read the breed guide for each dog that catches your eye and write down its exercise and grooming needs before you contact a breeder.
